I took ballet classes between the age of 6 and 13 and loved it! When I was younger I dreamed of becoming a ballerina but eventually realised I wasn’t built for ballet either physically or mentally (a lot of hard work!). I attended a few adult ballet classes but didn’t feel able to keep up even though at the time I wasn’t too unfit.
Some years have passed since then and the idea of going to a class fills me with dread! If I go to a class, whether it be ballet, pilates or some other class, I tend to overdo it because I’m not operating at my own speed and level of fitness. I “think” I can keep up with everyone else and try my best but the upshot of it is I can hardly move the next day….
That’s why I’m a big fan of exercise DVDs that you can do in your own home, at your own speed and apply some sense so you don’t overdo it. Over the years I’ve searched for what I call real ballet DVDs but they’ve been hard to find. I’ve wasted money buying DVDs only to find they’re just not good enough – either they’re not really ballet, or the form of the instructor is really bad or they’re just plain awful!
Then one day I stumbled over The Lazy Dancer on YouTube.
The Lazy Dancer is Alessia and she is great! She’s a professional ballerina and so all the exercises are done using the correct form. A lot of her videos are ballet and some have other dance styles mixed in. There are 10 minute classes, 25 minute class and some even longer. This gives you something to get started with as well as something longer to get your teeth into.
Here’s one of my favourites.
